Therapy sessions for Adults

Therapy sessions are tailored to your goals using one or more of the following approaches. All the therapies I use are based on a strong evidence base of research, and mostly are time limited, typically 6 – 20 sessions. Some therapy episodes may be longer than this and depend on the person’s difficulties and circumstances.

Areas I specialise in:

  • Trauma/Complex PTSD/PTSD

  • anxiety, general and social

  • fears and phobias

  • confidence and self-esteem

  • anger and rage

  • self-criticism

  • low mood and depression

  • postnatal depression

  • exam stress

  • sleep difficulties

  • stress/burnout

  • motivation

  • promoting wellbeing

  • relational difficulties

These symptoms can be associated with historical traumatic experiences in childhood/adulthood, personal injury, loss or bereavement, abuse, bullying, domestic violence, or active military service. I aim to help people recover from the effects of these stressful events in both their personal functioning and relationships. I also help patients adjust to challenges including:

  • Health conditions

  • Life transitions

  • Adolescence

  • Parenting

  • Relationships beginning or ending

  • Divorce

  • Retirement

Some people live with a harsh inner self critic which makes them work extremely hard to achieve and get through life’s challenges. It can often leave people feeling really confused, exhausted or unfulfilled. For those living with self-criticism, therapy can be extremely helpful to learn to manage this and pursue goals that are driven by the values that are dear to them. This can be a really uplifting experience and one that I personally find helpful, and I am always enthusiastic to help people discover this for themselves with support in the work we do together. I use ideas from Compassion Focused Therapy, Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness alongside traditional CBT to offer a range of strategies for tackling self-critical thoughts and worry.

Therapy sessions for adolescents and emerging adults

Young people may have periods of anxiety, self-esteem, low mood, difficulties with friendships, school, college, or university. This can be associated with difficulties in settings outside of the home, friendships, relationships, physical health conditions or there may be family events to navigate such as parental separation or bereavement.

In my work with teenagers and emerging adults, I draw from experience and knowledge of child development, attachment relationships, family systems and evidence based psychological approaches.

I can offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and EMDR for stress, anxiety, panic, phobias, and depression providing practical strategies that will be helpful through adolescence and into adulthood.

When the sessions begin, I would spend the first few sessions meeting with parents and young person together and separately to help understand the situation, and then suggest a plan for future sessions. Therapy often proceeds with me meeting with the young person on their own and reviewing every 6 sessions.

Online Therapy

Research into online therapy has shown that it can be just as effective as in-person therapy for treating difficulties with mental health. It is also an effective way of treating emotional difficulties in relationships and for parent consultations.

In addition, online therapy has its own unique advantages, eliminating commuting times and allowing people to continue with therapy if they work away from home from time to time, go home at the end of a semester from university or for the person to be in their most comfortable and familiar setting during the sessions. Furthermore, it also allows for therapy to take place in a person’s native language, irrespective of where the person is located. It also enables choice for a person of therapist and model if this is not available you your geographical area.
